Overview

For over four decades (since 1969), Taylor’s higher education division has taken on the mantle of developing the nation’s youth into well-rounded, competitive and resilient human capital, contributing towards the development of Malaysia’s economic growth and prosperity. From its humble beginnings to its rise into a trademark of excellence and a global brand name, Taylor’s has scaled greater heights, constantly expanding its developmental horizons to stay abreast with the times.

Taylor’s College started out in a small building in Jalan Pantai, Kuala Lumpur, offering the Victorian High School Certificate (VHSC) programme for a student population of 345. Since then, it has expanded to include Taylor’s College Subang Jaya (launched in 1989), Taylor’s College Petaling Jaya (launched in 1992), Taylor’s College Sri Hartamas (launched in 2008) and Taylor’s University  at the brand new Lakeside Campus (launched in 2010), with regional offices in Penang, Johor Bahru, Kuantan, Sabah and Sarawak.

A host of other programmes were introduced, including the South Australian Matriculation (SAM), Canadian Pre-University (CPU), American Degree Programme (ADP), Cambridge A Levels and International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) as well as a comprehensive range of tertiary studies in fields such as Architecture, Design, Computer Science, Engineering, Quantity Surveying, Biosciences, Law, Business, Communications as well as Hospitality, Tourism & Culinary Arts and Medicine.
The commencement of work for the RM450 million Taylor’s Lakeside Campus in early 2007 is indeed an exciting phase in the 40-year-old history of Taylor’s, and underscores its continued commitment to self-development. It marks another major milestone for the institution, where great strides have been made since 1969.
The Lakeside Campus will house all existing tertiary programmes under one roof. Set on 27 acres of tropical greenery near Jalan PJS 7/5, the campus is surrounded by a revived 5.5 acre man-made lake, as well as a landscape of water plants, trees and flowering shrubs, and groundcover that provides a rich and stimulating natural environment in the neighbourhood.

The completion of Taylor’s Lakeside Campus is another step forward towards realising Taylor’s mission to become a university of 20,000 students renowned for its teaching excellence and the distinctive quality of its graduates.

Student Central is a one-stop-centre for students seeking assistance in general non-academic administrative matters. The centre provides convenient integrated services in collaboration with relevant departments, to give students the support and assistance they need.

1. LEAD @ Taylor’s University
LEAD is a customised leadership programme comprising of case study, workshop, team building activities and leadership development project. It provides emerging leaders with opportunities to examine the nature of good leadership with a large element of personal development for participants to explore their individual leadership styles, identify how to build on strengths and deal with weaknesses. At the end of the programme, students will be able to avoid common leadership pitfalls by mastering the skills of decision-making, goal setting and enhancing other skills set such as communication, teamwork, motivation, conflict management and perseverance.
2. Taylor’s University Student Council (TUSC)
Taylor’s University Student Council (TUSC) is a strategic platform for students to acquire in-depth leadership experience. TUSC serves as the chief representative body for students in the institution, with representation from all the schools. The TUSC ran annual elections to elect students to its various office-bearer positions as well as positions on the governing council. TUSC focuses primarily into student integration and welfare concerns and they regularly organises various on-campus events and campaigns to raise awareness and provide feedback to the institution on ways to improve the quality of life for students at Taylor’s. At the same time, TUSC also represents Taylor’s at external student events organised by the Ministry of Higher Education, corporate organisations and student bodies from other institutions.
3. Taylor’s University Ambassadors (T.U.A)
The Taylor’s University Ambassadors programme provides opportunity for students to gain multiple skills in the areas of event management, teambuilding, interpersonal communication, creative thinking and public speaking. By being involved in the T.U.A programme, students are able to master the art of communication and assess how effective usage of words choice, body language and listening can impact their relationship with others and make a lasting impression. T.U.A is the driver bringing forth positive experience for new students during the Orientation Week. Supported by the Taylor’s Orientation Committee, various team-building activities and familiarisation trip is organised to integrate and connect new students into the campus community.
Community Service Initiatives (CSI)
Community Service Initiatives (CSI) is a programme targeting at youth services. Youth service is critical to strengthen student’s senses of civic engagement and community, and help them to achieve their educational, developmental and social goals. CSI is a platform for students to be involved in various strategic service learning opportunities. The highlight of the CSI session is for students to be involved in a 7-Days Community Services Project focusing on Community Engagement, Educational, Personal Development and Social Responsibility. At the end of the journey, students will be able to understand the importance of volunteering and supporting sustainable community services. Engagement with the Community helps students to enhance their social perspectives to be socially responsible and contribute proactively to the community. In addition, it broadens their life experience enabling appreciation for challenging situations and strengthening self-perseverance.
Character Building
Many clubs and societies have been formed by students with wide ranges of interests, hobbies and backgrounds. These clubs and societies are important as they add colour and diversity into the campus life. At the same time, students are able to enhance their soft skills such as communications, teamwork, conflict management, creative thinking, problem solving and many more.

Sports and Recreation Centre 

The Sports and Recreation Centre provides a platform for students to lead a healthy and positive lifestyle through various sporting and fitness activities. This centre is also committed to organising a wide variety of recreational activities to support the integration of students from different faculties, and at the same time allow them to have a balanced learning environment.

Taylor’s University College Lakeside Campus is well equipped with sports facilities for students to enjoy a well-rounded and balanced student life on campus. The Sports and Recreation Centre will facilitate the booking and maintenance of various sports courts, equipment and other related sporting facilities.
2. Recreation Activities
The Sports and Recreation Centre offers a range of short recreational courses in martial arts, holistic health, sports coaching etc. Social sporting competitions and events on campus, such as fun runs and Campus Race are also offered. In the Student Lounge, the students can chill out with a game of Foosball and Pool, compete in board games, spend time with friends at the Networking Room or catch some educational shows at the TV station. Roles of the Student Mobility Office:

Counseling and Psychological Services Centre

Counselling and Psychological Services Centre (CPSC) aims at helping students resolve personal difficulties and acquire skills, attitudes and knowledge that will enable them to take full advantage of their experience at Taylor’s.

The primary goal of counselling is to help students develop the personal awareness and skills necessary to overcome problems and to grow and develop in ways that will allow them to take advantage of the educational opportunities at the university.

CPSC provides not only individual and group counselling, but it also offers on-going seminars, workshops and conferences aimed at equipping the campus community with knowledge and skills to enhance the emotional, intellectual, physical and social health and welfare of the students.

Individual and group counselling, and direct crisis intervention services to the campus community.
Students who come to the centre on an emergency basis receive crisis intervention help from the staff counsellors. These intervention services may include an initiation of on-going counselling and/or referral to additional university and community resources. CPSC also provides consultation to faculty and staff working in crisis situations where student well-being in a classroom or other university setting is of concern.
CPSC provides qualified, professional medical services to care for any physical illness and challenges that the students may face as they experience life at Taylor’s.

Health Services Centre

Health Services Centre (HSC) provides qualified, professional medical services to care for minor physical illness and challenges that the students may face while at Taylor’s.
Services are for the following minor injuries:
  • First Aid Treatment – for example, cuts, sprains, muscle pull, burns, etc
  • Fever and headache
  • Gastric pain
  • Blood pressure checking
  • Fainting spells
  • Severe menstrual/period cramps

Next to U Residences and Board Walk is a chic and modern boutique hotel known as the Ruemz Hotel. Available for public bookings, the hotel has a lobby and 7 floors with 80 single and twin-sharing rooms with attached bathrooms, and one connecting room on every floor for families. There is also a restaurant serving meals throughout the day and a 24-hour mini mart. Ruemz Hotel is operated by a group of full-time employees and selected students from the School of Hospitality, Tourism & Culinary Arts.

Career Services is committed in providing quality services and programmes to assist students in planning and deciding on career pathways, preparing for job search and interviews, and enhancing their employment opportunities. Career Services focuses on the following areas:

Career Services offers a number of career talks and workshops to better prepare students for future career exploration and job search. Various talks and workshops are organised every semester to cover topics that focus on resume & cover letter writing, interviewing skills, mock interviews, life as an accountant, careers in tax vs. audit, employer information sessions with GE, HSBC and many more.

Industry Visits
The industry visits give students the opportunity to experience the working environment of a corporate company, understand the company’s structure and culture, and discover career opportunities within a company or industry.

Career and Employment Fair
The Career and Employment Fair is an annual fair organised by Career Services. HR managers and directors from top world-class companies gather on campus to interview and recruit outstanding graduating students.

Employability Skills Programme
A series of skills development workshops and training is conducted for students in areas such as teamwork, problem solving and interpersonal skills. This is to assist students in developing the skills and confidence needed to increase their employment options and enhance their employability.

Internship 
The internship programme provides students with a work-and-learn experience that complements their classroom curriculum. This opportunity will enable them to learn how to apply theories in an industry, explore career options and gain knowledge of the working world.

Students can access the Job Placement Portal which is powered by Jobstreet to search and apply for jobs that include full time, part-time and internship positions. The online system also allows employers to post and manage job vacancies. Career Services sends e-bulletins to graduating students and graduates (those that fall within a year of graduation) to update them on available job vacancies.

Career Resource Centre
The Career Resource Centre provides students with reference materials and information about occupations, corporations and career opportunities. Materials include career related references, books, electronic career assessment tests and others.

Career Counselling
Career counselling is a one to one appointment with the Career Counsellor. Students can discuss or seek for advice on career related issues such as, “What are employers looking for?”, “How can I best market myself to employers?” and ‘What are my career options?”

Resume Checking
The Career Services will help to review students’ resume and cover letter and give them suggestions on where they might have gone wrong, how to avoid common mistakes and how to highlight their expertise.
