Pass Sijil Tinggi Pelajaran Malaysia (STPM) with minimum TWO (2) principals excluding Malaysian Studies,

A credit in Bahasa Malaysia at SPM level.
Overview
The programme aims to create well-rounded journalists with professional ethics and social skills that are of value to future employers, particularly in the area of media, communication, diplomacy, public relations and publicity. The course provides students with a framework for understanding journalism in a social platform. Key research, communication and media-handling skills are taught to enable students to handle the challenging world of journalism and the media industry.
This programme will train students to analyse journalism issues and techniques from the academic and practical perspective and train students to be an effective media specialist in the world of information, local or globally. Apart from this, students will be exposed to communication management and creative problem-solving strategies. Students will also be able to understand the role of ICT in journalism and use ICT to address journalism issues.

JLS1113: EFFECTIVE SPEAKING
This course is primarily prepared to equip students with basic speaking skills. Students will be exposed to concepts of idea building, research for topics and audience analysis and the general communication process. At the later stage, the various techniques of writing speeches, using audio visuals aids, and delivery of speeches from then aspects language and style and the non verbal are emphasized.
JSS1233: INTRODUCTION TO SOCIOLOGY
This course introduces sociology as a way to understand the world. This course will introduce students to the sociological perspective in examining our lives and social experiences. Among the topics are social group and social control, social inequality, social institution and social dynamics and social changes.
JSS1243: INTRODUCTION TO PSYCHOLOGY
Students will be introduced to the study of human psychology. This will enhance their understanding of different behavioral expression of individuals. Italso covers the areas of changes in the psychological state of human being.
JCS2153: COMMUNICATION THEORY
This course will introduce students to the field of communication theory and assist students to understand the pervasiveness of theories in communication, demystify the theoretical process and became more systematic and critical in understanding communication theories.
JLS1133: FUNDAMENTALS OF MEDIA WRITING
This course is designed for students who want to understand the grammatical and the stylistic elements of good media writing. The course covers different angles of proposing ideas, sentence building, punctuating and correct wording.
JMS1163: VISUAL COMMUNICATION
The subjects explores on the basic knowledge of the Visual Communication right to the introduction of media technologies of TV, Video, Computers and the World Wide Web. This includes the historical, understanding and the application of visual message which have the power to inform, educate and persuade an individual and culture.
JMS1223: GRAPHIC DESIGN COMMUNICATION
This course is designed to provide students the basic knowledge on design principles and the practical approaches in designing publications. The course will also delve into topics like historical context and the development of graphic communications, principles of design, and some usage of technology in designing.
JMS2223: INTERCULTURAL COMMUNICATION
This course provides students with a comprehensive overview of important theory and research in intercultural communication. The course also looks at the basic processes of intercultural communication and ties those processes to the practical task of creating understanding between people of different cultures, backgrounds and communication patterns.
JMS2313: INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS
The course helps students understand international relations concerning topics like politics, human rights, terorism, women and poverty. The course will helps student with more critical in their thinking ability when they deals with cross-boundry communication and dealings.
JCS2123: INTERPERSONAL COMMUNICATION
Interpersonal Communication provides an overview of theory and research pertaining to interpersonal communication focusing on personal and social relationships. This course will examine the processes involved in the interpersonal communication as a focus of study. Topics covered discuss the interpersonal communication processes, challenges and guidelines to increase communicative competence.
JMS2243: MALAYSIAN ECONOMY
The course emphasizes on the Malaysian economic structure which includes its historical economic developments, socio-economic problems, economic development plans and strategies.It includes various sectors together with its plans, strategies, population and labor force issues.
JMS2143: STATISTICS
This course exposes students to the foundation of statistics for the social and behavioral sciences. Students will learn ways the data are used to test the research hypotheses, to answer the research questions and to achieve the research objectives. For these goals, students will learn ways and processes of data analysis, which includes how to organize, summarize and interpret statistical information in a study.
JMS3153: PUBLICATION PRODUCTION
This is the capstone publication writing, editing, and production course. Students are expected to build upon skills taught in News writing, Feature Writing, Investigative Journalism and Editing. The major part of the course embraces training in editorial planning and management, writing and editing, graphic design and photography.
JMS3133: COMMUNICATION RESEARCH
This is a course that guides students on research methods particularly in the area of social sciences and the humanities. The course gives a quick access to the important principles, concepts,theories and practices in research methodes in both branches of study. It condenses the vast amount of detailed characteristics of the subject and summarizes the essentials that are related to a research work. These include the hypothesis testing and evaluations.
JMS2253: COMMUNICATION, LAW AND ETHICS
This course is designed to provide the understanding on how the law which affects the media industry, particularly the restriction that exists in the law that prohibits certain publications by the media. The course discusses the restrictions to the freedom of the press e.g. defamation law, contempt of court, copyright and law on advertising.
JJS1233: PRINCIPLES OF JOURNALISM
The course will guide students on how to become a responsible journalist. The course structure will include an introduction to principles of journalism covering the concept of news, news worthiness and responsibilities of journalists. Students will be exposed to the various types of news writing including the techniques of interviewing. Students will also be introduced to laws and ethical guidelines for a journalist.
JJS1313: NEWS WRITING
This course provides students on how to become a responsible and reliable journalist. The course will introduce students to the various techniques of writing news, techniques of newsgathering and other reporting principles. Student will also be introduced to laws and ethical guidelines of a journalist.
JSS1313: INTRODUCTION TO POLITICAL SCIENCE
This course provides students with basic knowledge and understanding of political science. It basically deals with definitions, subject matter, specializations, history and development of political science as a discipline of knowledge. Apart from that, it also discusses basic concepts such as power, authority, political culture, political socialization and the like. This course also intends to introduce selective Western political thinkers and philosophers with brief discussion of their ideas. Concepts of state, government, political party and interests group also will be highlighted.
JSM1323: MALAYSIAN POLITICS
This course provides students with basic knowledge and understanding of Malaysian politics. It basically deals with history and development of Malaysian political landscape. Apart from that, it also discusses fundamental issues in Malaysian politics such as the constitution, federalism, elements of government and their functions and others. This course also intends to introduce selective policies of former prime ministers of Malaysia. Concepts of state, government, and political parties also will be highlighted.
JSS1253: MASS MEDIA AND SOCIETY
This subject focuses on the media in their various forms – print and electronic – and how or why they have become an integral part of human life. Understanding the systems of mass media and society would mean delving into the nature of the social, political and economic order. Studying the concepts of freedom and controls in the society, the values and cultural identities, the power structure and the social order is therefore essential.
JJS2213: EDITING
The course offers a comprehensive instruction on how to edit news. It also streseses on the “Editor’s attitude” in editing news copy – news values, ethics, newsroom decision making, governing laws, and an understanding of the audience. Students will be equipped both with basics of effective publication editing and with the background needed to deal with the changing nature of the print medium and news forums.
JJS2224: FEATURE WRITING
This course will expose students to the various skills required to produce feature articles. They will be trained to write features using styles that would attract the attention of editors and readers. It will also expose students to the reading and writing of quality publications and train students to be able to think sharply and critically.
JJS2253: BUSINESS REPORTING
This subject trains students with basic skills in reporting and writing business news reporting. The purpose is to create a team of graduates with a specialization in business reporting covering in the subject range from general economic stories; company stories; commodity market; stock exchange; finance and banking; to transport.
JJS2223: MEDIA LITERACY
The course is designed for students to understand advertising and propaganda techniques with media effects in the global world. Students will also be exposed to the Malaysian context with some alternatives to the mainstream media. Students will be also taught to analyze, evaluate, and create messages in a wide variety of media modes and genres.
JJS2323: BROADCAST JOURNALISM
This course is specially design for journalism students to enhance their news writing skill for broadcasting media. The course includes special techniques required for broadcast news writing with emphasis producing a copy. Students will also be taught on techniques on interviewing and converting news into scripts.
JSS3113: ONLINE JOURNALISM
Online journalism is a basic course that introduces students to a new dimension in news presentation via the internet. Students will be exposed to concepts, practices, issues and development in this field of journalism. Among the topics of discussion are the basic concepts of online journalism, writing online, issues in online reporting, computer assisted reporting, using internet search engines and ethics in online journalism.
JJS3123: PHOTOJOURNALISM
The course offers students to develop skills, techniques and art of capturing the essence of a story in a photograph. Students will be equipped on how to capture the “moment” or event to enhance a news story or to stand alone. Students will also be taught to shoot photos for newspapers, magazines, public relations companies and other media.
JSM3223: CRITICAL ISSUES IN JOURNALISM
This course takes a look at some of the larger issues that journalists face in their day-to-day work. The list of issues includes diversity of race, gender, sexuality and religion in newsroom makeup and story coverage. Some other issues are ever changing such as the landscape of news media in the digital age and the revolving notion of who is a journalist in the world of bloggers and citizen journalism. Also highlighted are new media as a watchdog of democracy.
JJS3223: WRITING FOR SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY
This course is designed to provide an understanding and importance of writing about science and technology for general readers. Topics designed aim to assist the development of effective strategies for accomplishing writing tasks in technology and sciences.
JJS3133: INVESTIGATIVE REPORTING
This course provides students with an in-depth understanding of Investigative reporting. The course requires creative thinking, a thorough and more precise form of factual collection and analysis. Students will be guided to get the “truth” for concerned public.
JJS3333: INTERNATIONAL JOURNALISM
This course is designed to equip students with the knowledge of global media environment and looks at the different roles of journalism and journalists as a global culture resource. The course features international case studies selected to be analyzed and critically discussed.
JJS3243: CONVERGENT JOURNALISM
The course prepares students to meet various demands in the global world and how journalism has become interdisciplinary, innovative and creative. The course prepares students to critically analyze the importance of convergence implications in media. The course also demonstrates various kinds of news delivery methods.
JTS3316: INDUSTRIAL TRAINING
The subject discussed tend to expose student to various aspects of industrial training especially in areas related to journalism such as newspaper organisation, tv & radio stations, online media and other content providers.
