Core Course Description
MPW 1113: BAHASA KEBANGSAAN (MALAYSIAN NATIONAL LANGUAGE)
This course gives exposure to students about the history, policy and position, status and function of Malay language as well as the culture. Pronunciation and intonation as well as spelling and grammar issues will be explained to them, so that they can communicate through speaking and writing, besides understanding prose and poems.
MPW 1133: MALAYSIAN STUDIES
This subject aims to produce Malaysian citizens who possessed the spirit of patriotism. The subject begins with the history of Malaysian’s independent struggle which cover Malay’s traditional government, western colonialism and the formation of Malaysia. Major discussions will be focused on the federal constitutions and administrative system of modern Malaysia such as federalism, parliamentary democracy and constitutional monarchy. The discussions of ethnic-relation and social integration as well as Malaysia’s government policy complete the syllabus.
MPW 1143: ISLAMIC STUDIES / MPW 1153: MORAL STUDIES
This course emphasizes on the understanding of every student as a Malaysian citizen on Islam / moral and its civilization. It will produce a balance citizen spiritually with high moral values who understand Islamic / moral teaching as a balance and strong way of life, and who is able to face problems and challenges.
CO CURRICULUM
This course emphasizes on the practical aspects of students in building up their commitment as a member of the society. Students are required to actively involve in sports and clubs of their choice. Students are to conduct programmes and do social work. The objective is to produce balance students spiritually with high moral values in giving back to the society at large.
ZEU 1113 : PROFICIENCY ENGLISH 1
This course mostly covers the basic grammatical knowledge and the necessary language skills to communicate effectively. This course is the continuation from Remedial English.
ZEU 1223 : PROFICIENCY ENGLISH 2
This course mostly covers the basic grammatical knowledge and the necessary language skills to communicate effectively. This course is the continuation from Proficiency English 2.
FOREIGN LANGUAGES 1
(ARABIC / TURKISH / MANDARIN / JAPANESE / FRENCH)
This course is design for students who have no background in other than native speaking language. It emphasizes greatly on developing participants oral communication skills in situations and other relevant oral tasks. This course provides remedial exercises and practice with the integration of vocabulary, grammar, and the communication skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing.
FOREIGN LANGUAGES 2
(ARABIC / TURKISH / MANDARIN / JAPANESE / FRENCH)
This course is the continuation for students who have taken the same language in Foreign Languages 1. It is designed for students who have the basic background of the language in order to enable them further progress their language knowledge and skills. It emphasizes greatly on developing participants oral communication skills in social situations and in performing other relevant tasks. This course also provides more sophisticated exercises and practice with the integration of vocabulary, grammar, and the communication skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing.
IAD 1153: COMPUTER FUNDAMENTAL
In this course, student should be able to understand basic computer concept and their terminology in ICT. They should know the importance of computer literacy and able to identify the component of a computer as well as the element of an information system. Besides that, students will be introduced to the history of internet, computer communication tools and computer security risks. In addition, the students will be able to practice on how to apply three types of application software.
JMD 1123: INTRODUCTION TO SOCIOLOGY
This introductory course explains the background knowledge to appreciate sociology. On top of that, this course is to make the student understand the sociological perspective of society and social life. Students are to understand the social dynamics in multi-cultural society like Malaysia.
JMD 1133: INTRODUCTION TO PSYCHOLOGY
Psychology is an academic and applied discipline involving the scientific study of mental processes and behavior. Application of such knowledge to various spheres of human activity, including relating to individuals’ daily lives and the nature of mental illnesses will also be discussed. Psychology describes and attempts to explain consciousness, behavior and social interaction.
JMD 1113: INTRODUCTION TO MASS COMMUNICATION
This introductory course explains the forces that drive the mass communication industry while at the same time motivate students to exercise critical thinking as consumers of media. Students are encouraged to discuss about the media industry from the inside out and in doing so explore the many dimensions of mass communication that operates in our society.
JMD 2113: INTRODUCTION TO ELECTRONIC MEDIA
This introductory course explains the forces that drive the electronic media industry while at the same time motivate students to exercise critical thinking as consumers of electronic media. Students are encouraged to discuss about the electronic media industry from the inside out and in doing so explore the many dimensions of electronic media that operates in our society.
JMD 2133: INTRODUCTION TO CORPORATE COMMUNICATION
This introductory course explains the development and nature of corporate communication. Also studies on communication process involving the internal and external publics such as events, image, and collaborative efforts affecting media strategies and how corporate identity can be managed. The course will also study the significant in corporate advertising and culture that operates in our society.
JMD 3123: INTRODUCTION TO RESEARCH METHODOLOGIES
This subject introduces the theoretical discourses in research methodologies that enable students to better choose and evaluate appropriate research techniques. Students will be exposed to a range of research methodologies and methods, including qualitative and quantitative research, surveys, content analysis, interviewing and focus groups, as well as ethical considerations in research methods choice, communicating and interpreting research data. This unit enables students to design a basic survey, use simple statistics, organize a focus group, conduct interviews in different settings, and interpret the result of commissioned research. Students will also learn the essential skills in setting research objectives, monitoring, evaluating and judging the success of communication campaigns.
JMD 1213: COMMUNICATION SKILLS
This course is designed to introduce students to the basic concepts in human communication. Concepts which made up of interrelated parts in communication will also be discussed such as perceiving, listening, understanding self; verbal and nonverbal and relationships. Also studies of communication processes, competence and skills that influence the effectiveness in adapting to different people and in various communication contexts: ranging from intrapersonal, interpersonal, family, group, organizational and public communication.
JMD 3143: VISUAL COMMUNICATION
The subject explores the basic knowledge of Visual Communication. It introduces the media technologies of TV, video, film and computers. This includes the historical understanding and the application of visual messages which have the power to inform, educate and persuade individuals and influence culture.
JMD 1243: EFFECTIVE SPEAKING
This course is prepared to equip students with basic speaking skills. Students will be exposed to concepts of idea building, research for topics and audience analysis and the general communication process. At the later stage, various techniques of writing speeches, using audio visuals aids, and delivery of speeches are emphasized. Students will also be given opportunities to practise speaking on various topics in front of an audience.
JMD 2223: READING, THINKING AND WRITING
This is a basic course in reading, thinking and writing. However the course will focus more on the writing skills. The course will also include the writing process that guides students through proper steps reading, thinking, writing and revising. Throughout this course, special emphasis will be given to the fundamentals of questionings which students are required to ask; what is the purpose of writing? For whom is the writing intended? How much information must be included? The rhetorical applications will also be discussed such as creating instructions, explaining a process, describing and comparing the information, explaining cause and effect, persuading, and narrating.
JMD 1234: WRITING FOR THE MEDIA
This course is designed to provide the understanding and importance of writing for general readers. Topics designed aim to assist students to be able to fulfill writing tasks. Students will be introduced to the process and principles of writing as a strategy for gathering and sharing information. The course will focus on media writing styles, the importance of accuracy, proof reading and editing.
JMD 1223: DIGITAL PHOTO COMMUNICATION
This course is aimed to teach students to take and compose photographs using the Digital Single Lens Reflects (DSLR) cameras and edit as well as manipulate them in digital form. Software for digital editing, manipulating and presenting will be used for the course.
JMD 2213: DIGITAL AUDIO AND VIDEO PRODUCTION
This professional course is offered for the later semester students. It encourages students to use their creativity to produce video programme. Students will be taught concepts and techniques to produce video programme from pre to post production stages.
JMD 2144: MULTIMEDIA DESIGN AND PRODUCTION
This course will explain the various concept of multimedia designing. It provides student with the opportunity to use the technologies available on different platforms. The course will teach student how to use the new technologies for multimedia designing.
JMD 3213: PUBLICATION, DESIGN AND LAYOUT
This course provides student with the basic knowledge on design principles and the practical approaches in designing publications. The course will also dwelve into topics such as historical context and the development of graphic communications, principles of design, and the technology in designing.
JMD 2234: PUBLICATION PRODUCTION, DESIGN AND TECHNIQUE
This is the capstone publication writing, editing, and production course. Students are expected to build upon skills taught in News writing and Reporting, Feature Writing, Investigative and Interpretative Reporting, Graphics and Layout, Photo Communication and Copy Editing. The major for the course embraces training in editorial planning and management, writing and editing, graphic design and photography. At the same time, students are expected to acquire a working knowledge of business and advertising as well as production, as it relates to publication as a product. With a combination of those skills, students are required to produce a publication centered on press and media criticism as the theme.
JMD 3133: COMMUNICATION LAW AND ETHICS
This course is designed to provide an understanding of how laws affect the media industry, particularly the restriction that exists in the law that prohibits certain publications by the media. This course will focus on media and communications laws. The topics discuss the restrictions to the freedom of the press for example defamation laws, contempt of court, copyright and laws on advertising. Topics covered include licensing system, cyber laws, universal service obligation, content regulation and consumer regulation.
JMD 3113: UNDERSTANDING COMMUNICATION THEORIES
This introductory course seeks to explore the nature and practices of understanding the development of communication theories. It attempts to define both theories and practice of development communication and to examine the impact of the utilization of communication systems and processes to promote social change. It encourages students to develop their understanding in the context of communication theories and practices in social development.
JMD 2123: INSTRUCTIONAL COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGIES
This course introduces the students to various aspects of communication variables involving student-instructor relationship such as instructor immediacy behavior, students’ motivation and learning process.
JMD 3224: EVENT MANAGEMENT AND COMMUNICATION
This course will guide the students in learning the knowledge of principles and procedures for planning, designing, operating and implementing an indoor, outdoor or special event. The students will also study promotions and marketing strategies as well as hiring and budgeting procedures, and also contracts of event management.
JMD 3234: STUDENT PROJECT AND EVALUATION
This subject is designed to provide opportunities to investigate students’ communication and research skills, and to enable students to integrate and apply research skills in a practical situation and to familiarize students with the demands made on communicators in the professional environment. Students are requested to report their findings in oral and written forms.

There are many career paths that a person with a Communication Major can choose. Here are some job titles graduates with Communication Majors could apply. This is an idea list, it represents some, but certainly not all of the careers in the market. Some careers may take additional schooling and certificates.
Communication widens up the horizon of career options for a person depending upon personal interest and inclination. Graduates of the diploma programme may also continue their education in a more specialized degree programme.
