Overview
- Broad-based knowledge and concepts for organizing information materials.
- Acquire methods for organizing knowledge used in information storage and retrieval system.
- Students will be exposed with the universally accepted tools, standards and the importance of accurate, consistent and reliable computerized bibliographic records.
- Students are required to attend an internship programme to apply theory and practical into the libraries and information centers.
Program Learning Outcomes
- Acquire knowledge on the roles, functions and activities of different types of libraries and information services;
- Possesses in-depth knowledge of the functions of library system and information services;
- Competent in designated activities such as acquisition, cataloguing and circulation within a section or department of a library or information services;
- Be a self directed learner, thinker and work independently as well as the need to undertake lifelong learning in the field of organization of information management;
- Provide effective services to users through print and education medium;
- Practice librarianship in the spirit of relevant, ethical and professional practice in a rapidly changing multicultural, multiethnic and multilingual society.

This course introduces the fundamental elements of librarianship and archive. It will also introduce origin and development of libraries, function of libraries and types of library workers and their responsibilities. This course also introduces the types of library users, their information needs and the types of library materials and their specific characteristics. |

Descriptive Cataloguing I: Monograph |
The purpose of this course is to equip student with the knowledge and skills required to create bibliographic records of all library materials and to be able to understand the techniques of retrieving and accessing library materials. |

Computerized Cataloguing |
This course is primarily concerned with the concepts for computer based cataloguing work. It is intended to expose the students with the Machine Readable Catalogue (MARC) format as an universally accepted standard for coding computer based catalogue records and to develop the understanding of the importance of accurate, consistent and reliable computerized bibliographic records. |

- Public Sector: Basic starting monthly salary is around RM1,300; plus allowances (such as housing and entertainment) the total can amount to around RM2,000.
- Private Sector: The amount of basic starting monthly salary can vary from the above amount. However, the total amount of monthly salary earned (inclusive of allowances) is subject to negotiation and which can be higher than that earned in the public sector.
