This programme examines theories and research in linguistics focusing on schools of Linguistics, Language System and Structures, Research Methodology, Theories in Phonology, Grammar and Semantics, among others.
Entry Requirements
A bachelor’s degree with a CGPA of not lower than 3.0 or equivalent in the field of language
or linguistics studies, or
A bachelor’s degree with a CGPA of not lower than 3.0 or equivalent in a non-language field;
and a minimum of one year work experience in a field related to studies in language use or linguistics, or
A bachelor’s degree with CGPA lower than 3.0 or equivalent; and a minimum of two
years work experience in a field related to studies in language use or linguistics, or
Other qualifications approved by the Senate from time to time
Language Requirement
Before registering, international applicants are required to obtain at least a band 6.0 for IELTS or a minimum score of 550 for the paper based TOEFL if their first and master’s degrees were not obtained from a university that uses English Language as the medium of instruction, or an pass in any English Language Proficiency Programme (ELP) approved by the University.
Programme Structure
This Master’s programme consists of coursework and dissertation. The programme is offered in English and Bahasa Malaysia as the medium of instruction. Candidates need to complete 2 core courses (Linguistic Theory and Research Methodology), 2 core programme courses (Phonetics & Phonology, Morphology, Syntax and Pragmatics) and 1 elective course (Introduction to Sign Language Studies, Human Communication Disorders, Semiotics, Language for Specific Purposes, Translation Studies, Field Linguistics and Corpus Linguistics). At the end of the candidate’s study, a dissertation must be submitted. Candidates need to present a research proposal for approval and a in candidature defense to be awarded a Master Degree.Candidates are required to complete the study between 3 to 8 semesters.
