Overview
Occupational safety and health refers to the practice of observing and analyzing working environments to ensure that they are safe for employees. Every workplace, be it a factory, a kitchen, or a store, has the potential for accidents to occur. The job of the occupational safety specialist is to anticipate and identify potential hazards so that the employer may make appropriate changes before accidents happen. Potential workplace hazards may include flaws in the design of a building that could cause physical injury to employees, biological or chemical hazards, or on-the-job stress due to overwork and poor working conditions. Occupational safety and health technicians work to prevent harm to property, workers, the public, and the environment. They are responsible for implementing regulations that improve buildings, equipment and working practices. Working closely with many different organizations and regulatory agencies, occupational health specialists educate employers on healthier and safer working practices.

Students are required to conduct research projects in the field of health science under the supervision of lecturers. This course prepares students to respect the philosophy, principles and various research methodologies in the field of health sciences. Students will learn the basic ideas, values, and an investigative need to create and provide research. This includes a systematic process for determining the integrity and ‘reliability’ in the quantitative and qualitative research. It includes an assessment of approaches and techniques, observations, data analysis, data and formulating conclusions. It provides early introduction to a research project as students will prepare and present a research proposal at the end of this course. |
MGS 4116 |
Research Project |
This research project is designed to provide final year students with an opportunity to conduct research in an area related to occupational safety and health. Students must present the project proposal to the committee. Students must make arrangements with both the faculty supervisor and the course head of program at least one semester in advance. The project supervisor should normally be a faculty member. |
MOS 1112 |
Introduction to Occupational Safety and Health |
The field of occupational safety and health is concerned with preserving and protecting human and facility resources in the workplace. Students will be introduced to the basic fundamental and elements of occupational safety and health (OSH) management, OSH legislation, occupational safety and occupational health. |
MOS 1233 |
Industrial Toxicology |
In Industrial Toxicology, students will be introduced to the concepts of toxicology within the framework of occupational safety & health. Among the topics discussed include the main routes of entry of toxic substances, the factors that influence their absorption, distribution and storage, the descriptors of susceptibility to toxicants, and the consequences of toxic exposure to chemicals. This will allow student to recognize the various toxic substances that may be present in the workplace. |
MOS 1243 |
