Objective

The Bachelor of Economics (Hons.) is a holistic and integrated programme designed to achieve the following objectives :

• To stimulate students intellectually through the study of economics and to lead them to appreciate its applicability to a range of issues and its relevance in a variety of contexts.
• To develop familiarity with the major facts and institutions of the Malaysian economy, regional economies and the world economy.
• To nurture students who are multidisciplinary and able to link economics with other disciplines that come from growing industries enabling them to have a holistic and practical view of the world.
• To develop a fundamental understanding of modern economic theory, of its scope and limitations, and of its applications in the interpretation of facts and the formulation of policy.
• To equip students with the relevant mathematical, statistical and econometric skills, and experience in the use of appropriate computer software.
• To develop in students the ability to apply the knowledge and skills they have acquired to the solution of theoretical and applied problems in economics, and an appreciation of the appropriate level of abstraction in the construction of models as solution tools.
• To develop in students, through the study of economics, a range of transferable skills that will be of value in employment and self-employment.
• To generate in students an appreciation of the economic dimension of wider social and political issues.
• To instil in students business and entrepreneurial skills and knowledge.
• To enhance students’ understanding of the changing world and the dynamism in economic decisions and policies.

TARSOG’s Bachelor of Economics (Hons.) is designed to provide a specialised academic programme due to the presence of market demand for academic, business, government economists as well as economic graduates who are prepared for managerial positions at the local and international levels.

This programme combines economics with subjects related to government and public policy. The increasing involvement of private sector organisations in public service delivery makes a thorough understanding of how government operates at different levels an essential element of economics.

This programme provides a particularly strong combination between economics, international trade and the process of government which is central to the dynamism and challenges of the modern world. The programme will also develop public administrators who are able to understand economic concepts, principles and theories, analyse them in the context of the dynamic economic, social and political environment and challenges, and apply them in the formulation of viable economic policies to strengthen the nation’s economy. It strives to produce competent graduates in economics with business acumen, analytical skills, global perspectives, holistic personalities, high levels of employability, and marketability to compete and work in the local and international environment. It offers students the opportunity to choose a plan of study consistent with their interests, abilities, and career aspirations.

TARSOG’s Bachelor of Economics (Hons.) is a unique programme specifically designed for full-time students, and is a three-year programme by coursework.

Requirements

3 Year-Programme

• Pass in STPM/A-Level with 2 principals; or
• Pass in Matriculation or Foundation which is recognized by the Malaysian Government; or
• Diploma from other Universities with CGPA achievement at least 3.00; or
• Diploma from Polytechnics under the Ministry of Education, Malaysia
• Equivalent qualification which is recognized by the Malaysian Government

4 Year-Programme*

• Pass in SPM/SPMV/O-Level with 5 credits including Bahasa Malaysia, English and Mathematics or equivalent qualifications.

English Proficiency Requirements

International Students

• TOEFL 550 or IELTS Band 6 (students without TOEFL and IELTS are required to complete and pass an Intensive English Programme offered by the University).
• The validity period for TOEFL and IELTS is two (2) years from the date of the award.

Note: Additional charges will be imposed based on English placement level, in addition to the respective programme fees.

Malaysian Students
Malaysian students who enroll into Universiti Tun Abdul Razak Bachelor programmes must fulfill the following English proficiency requirements:

• Students who have a credit in English Language at the SPM/SPMV level are required to take additional English courses, depending on the level of proficiency.
• Students who do not have a credit in English Language at the SPM/SPMV level are required to undergo the Intensive English Programme.
• Students who have a distinction in English Language at the SPM/SPMV level are not required to take additional English courses.

Note: Additional charges will be imposed based on English placement level, in addition to the respective programme fees.
