Overview

The programme aims to create well-rounded corporate executives with professional ethics and social skills that are of value to future employers, particularly in the area of communication, corporate social responsibility, investor relations, diplomacy, public relations, integrated marketing, and publicity and event management.  The course provides students with a framework for understanding communication theories and processes in an organisational context.  Key research, communication and media-handling skills are taught to enable students to handle challenging real-world projects from communication to delivery and subsequent evaluation.

This programme will train students to analyse corporate communication issues from the academic and practical perspectives and train students to communicate effectively in the business world, be it local or global.  Apart from this, students will be exposed to communication management and creative problem-solving strategies. Students will also be able to understand the role of ICT in corporate communication and use ICT to address corporate communication issues.

Students will also be introduced to the concepts and principles of human behaviour, marketing, advertising, public relations, journalism, the media, management, design, and information technology. The lifelong learning skills provided by the programme enable the students to critically, objectively and analytically address complex problems or issues so as to work independently and manage time effectively.

The aims, objectives and learning outcomes are made known to the students via briefing and brochure distribution during orientation week.  Internally, brochures of the programme were distributed to the lecturers, and a poster will be posted on the notice board.  The information is also posted in the faculty’s website.

Core Course Description

COURSE OUTLINE / SYNOPSIS

1.    MPW 2113: BAHASA KEBANGSAAN A

This course gives exposure to students about the history, policy and position, status and function of Malay language as well as the culture. Pronunciation and intonation as well as spelling and grammar issues will be explained to them, so that they can communicate through speaking and writing, besides understanding prose and poems
2.    MPW 2123: BAHASA KEBANGSAAN B

This subject is introduced to the foreign students to help them use Bahasa Melayu in their social life. Therefore this syllabus stresses on language for communication and the use of simple language method like using pronunciation and intonation, spelling system, speaking and writing as well as understanding public statements.
3.    MPW 2133: MALAYSIAN STUDIES

This subject aims to produce Malaysian citizens who possessed the spirit of patriotism. The subject begins with the history of Malaysian’s independent struggle which cover Malay’s traditional government, western colonialism and the formation of Malaysia. Major discussions will be focused on the federal constitutions and administrative system of modern Malaysia such as federalism, parliamentary democracy and constitutional monarchy. The discussions of ethnic-relation and social integration as well as Malaysia’s government policy complete the syllabus.
4.    MPW 2143: ISLAMIC STUDY

This course emphasizes on the understanding of every student as a Malaysian citizen on Islam and its civilization.  It will produce a citizen,    especially    Muslim    student,    who understand Islamic teaching as a balance and strong way of life, and who is able to face any problems and challenges.
5.    MPW 2153: MORAL EDUCATION

This course emphasizes on the understanding of every student as a Malaysian citizen on Islam and its civilization.  It will produce a citizen,    especially    Muslim    student,    who understand Islamic teaching as a balance and strong way of life, and who is able to face any problems and challenges.
6.    ZES 1133: TECHNICAL ENGLISH I

The Technical English I subject emphasizes on the academic aspect.  It prepares students to meet the various demands required of them while on university campus. Strategy Training (LHTL) will be incorporated in the course to train autonomous learners.  There will still be meaningful practice and the integration of the four language skills – listening, speaking, reading and writing – with vocabulary and grammar through appropriate academic contexts.
7.    ZES 1243: TECHNICAL ENGLISH II

This is a follow-up of the Technical English I subject with more emphasis on the academic aspect as well as introducing the occupational components to the students. It prepares students to meet the various demands required of them while completing in the field of their studies and while hunting for a suitable job after graduating.  Strategy Training (LHTL) will be incorporated in the course to train autonomous learners.  There will still be meaningful practice and the integration of the four language skills – listening, speaking, reading and writing – with vocabulary and grammar through appropriate academic & occupational contexts.
8.    ZLU 1222: MANDARIN 1

This course is design for students who have no background in Mandarin. It emphasizes greatly on developing participants oral communication skills in situations and other relevant oral tasks. This course also providing remedial exercises and practice with the integration of vocabulary, grammar, and the communication skills of Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing.
9.    ZLU 2222: MANDARIN 2

This course is a continuation to the basic Mandarin course and its grammar.  It will review and consolidate the fundamental skills that students have built up in their Mandarin 1.  It also provides students the opportunity to converse at intermediate level Mandarin and write simple Chinese characters.
10.    ZLU 1252: TURKISH 1

This course is designed for students who have no background in Turkish.  It emphasizes greatly on developing participants oral communication skills in situations and other relevant oral tasks. This course also providing remedial exercises and practice with the integration of vocabulary, grammar, and the communication skills of Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing.
11.    ZLU 2252: TURKISH 2

This course is designed for students who have basic background in Turkish in order to enable them further progress their language knowledge and skills. It emphasizes greatly on developing participants oral communication skills in social situations and in performing other relevant tasks. This course also provides more sophisticated exercises and practice with the integration of vocabulary, grammar, and the communication skills of Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing
12.    ZKU 1112: CO-CURRICULUM

This course emphasizes on the understanding of every student as a Malaysian citizen on Islam and its civilization.  It will produce a citizen,    especially    Muslim    student,    who understand Islamic teaching as a balance and strong way of life, and who is able to face any problems and challenges.
13.    JCS 2153: COMMUNICATION THEORY

This course will introduce students to the field of communication theory. It helps students understand the pervasiveness of theories in communication, demystify the theoretical process and became more systematic and critical in understanding communication theories.
14.    JCS 2143: MEDIA RELATIONS & CRISIS COMMUNICATION

This course is divided into three parts. In the first part, students will be introduced to the basics of media relations and the necessities for good media relations. In the second part, students will deal with greater details of media relation with strong emphasis on persuasion, the theories and the skills of good persuasive writing for the media. And in the third parts students will delve with crisis communication management topics which will include certain details on how to plan and recommendations when crisis arises. In this part, students will be taught on the tactics on how to win the heart of the stakeholders through the media.
15.    JCS 3133: EVENT MANAGEMENT

Through this course the students will learn the knowledge of the principles and procedures for planning, designing, operating and implementing an indoor, outdoor or special event. The students will also study promotions and marketing strategies as well as he hiring and budgeting procedures, and also contracts of event management. Students will design and implement risk management plans within event management.
16.    JMS 2223: INTERCULTURAL COMMUNICATION

This course provides students with a comprehensive overview of importtant theory and research in intercultural communication. The course also looks at the basic processes of intercultural communication and ties those processes to the practical task of creating understanding between people of different cultures, banckgrounds and communication pattern.
17.    JCS 2233: FINANCIAL CORPORATE COMMUNICATION

This course exposes students to the fundamental concept and elements of financial corporate communication (fcc), knowledge and skills necessary to create fcc program, and the planning process of fcc. This course also discusses the major fcc functions – financial networking, financial publicity and investor relations, and how to use them effectively in the fcc program of an organization
18.    JCS 2243: INTERGRATED MARKETING COMMUNICATIONS

This course builds on essential marketing concepts by focusing on the promotional element of the marketing mix. It introduces marketing communications strategy, and examines effective use of advertising, public relations, direct marketing, sales promotion and the media. Marketing Communications practitioners’ work across these aspects to coordinate and bring effectiveness in the planned communications programs locally and internationally.
19.    JMS 2253: COMMUNICATIONS LAW & ETHICS

This course is designed to provide the understanding on how the law which affects the media industry, particularly the restriction that exists in the law that prohibits certain publications by the media. This course will focus on media and communications law. The topics discuss the restrictions to the freedom of the press e.g. defamation law, contempt of court, copyright and  law on advertising. Communications law deals with the communications and law affecting the multimedia industry. Topics include licensing system, cyberlaws, universal service obligation, content regulation and consumer regulation.
20.    JCS 3113: CORPORATE COMMUNICATION IN PRACTICE

This course is designed to examine the development of corporate events, image, collaborative efforts affecting media strategies and how corporate identity can be managed and its implication on corporate disclosure in the information age.
21.    JCS 3123: COMMUNICATION PLANNING & MESSAGE DESIGN

This subject focuses on the foundations of communication planning (Information Design) in contemporary culture, emphasizing on the traditions of verbal and visual communication.  The course will rely on extensive reading and analysis of concrete example of communication planning.
22.    JMS 3133: COMMUNICATION RESEACH

This is a course that guides students on research methods particularly in the area of social science and the humanities.  The course gives quick access to the important principles, concepts,theories and practices in research methodes in both branches of study.  It condenses the vast amount of detailed characteristics of the subject and summerizes the essential that related to a research work. These include the hypothesis testing and evaluations.
23.    JCS 2163: ORGANIZATIONAL COMMUNICATION SKILL

This course intends to expose different perspectives in ensuring effective communications practices in an organization.  Lessons will include the basic communication perspective based on communication model.  Later students will be taught on some principles of communication that they will find if useful when they are employed. In the third stage, students will be exploring methods of communication practices in modern organization.
24.    JMS 3153: PUBLICATION PRODUCTION

This is the capstone publication writing, editing, and production course. Students are expected to especially build upon skills taught in Newswriting and Reporting, Feature Writing, Investigative and Interpretative Reporting, Graphics and Layout, Photo Communication and Copy Editing.  The major part of the course embraces training in editorial planning and management, writing and editing, graphic design and photography.  At the same time, students are expected to acquire a working knowledge of business and advertising as well as production, as it relates to publication as a product. With a combination of those skills, students are required to produce a publication centred on press and media criticism as the theme and on a topic or issue that would function as the cover story of their collective choosing guided by the lecturer.
25.    JCS 3213: CORPORATE COMMUNICATION AND ORGANIZATIONAL CLIMATE

This course intends to expose students to the different facets of management and types of communication processes taken by organization to achieve their goals. Students will experience hands-on skill by becoming a communication consultant of their chosen organization. At the end of the course, students will have to submit a project paper concerning the organization’s communication system, methods or problems that they encounter.
26.    JCS 2123: INTERPERSONAL COMMUNICATION

Interpersonal Communication provides an overview of theory and research pertaining to interpersonal communication focusing on personal and social relationships.  This course will examine the processes involved in the interpersonal communication as a focus of study.  Topics covered discuss the interpersonal communication processes, challenges and guidelines to increase communicative competence. Particular attention will be given to core elements of the interpersonal communication process, such as verbal communication, non-verbal cues in communication and the relationship between communication and culture in various communication context.
27.    JMS 2313: INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS

The course helps students understand international relations  concerning topics like politics, human right, terorism, women and poverty. Lectures will include case studies which exaples from around the world. These will includes historical perspectives which provides the background of the current senario. The course will helps student with more critical in their thinking ability when they deals with cross-boundry communication and dealings.
28.    JLS 1113: EFFECTIVE SPEAKING

This course is primarily prepared to equipped students with basic speaking skills. Students will be exposed to concepts of idea building, research for topics and audience analysis and the general communication process.  At the later stage, the various techniques of writing speeches, using audio visuals aids, and delivery of speeches from then aspects language and style and the non verbal are emphasized.
29.    JLS 1123: FUNDAMENTALS OF MEDIA WRITING

This course is designed for students who want to understand the gramatical and the stylistic element of good media writing.  The course covers different angles of proposing ideas, sentence building, puntuating and correct wording.
30.    JMS 1143: INTRODUCTION TO MASS COMMUNICATION

This introductionary course reveals the forces that drive the industry while at the sametime motivating students to excercise critical skills as consumers of media.  Students are encourage to think about the media industry from the inside out and in doing so exlpore the many dimensions of mass communication that operates in our society.
31.    JCS 1153: DIGITAL PHOTO COMMUNICATION

This course is aimed to teach students to take and compose photographs using Single Lens Reflects (SLR) cameras and later edit and manipulate them in digital form.  Digital software for editing, manipulating and presenting will be used for the course.
32.    JMS 1163: VISUAL COMMUNICATION

The subjects explore more on the basic knowledge of the Visual Communication right to the introduction of media technologies of TV, Video, Computers and the World Wide Web.  This includes the historical, understanding and the application of visual message which have the power to inform, educate and persuade an individual and culture.
33.    JMS 1223: GRAPHIC DESIGN COMMUNICATION

This course is designed to provide students the basic knowledge on design pronciples and the practical approaches in designing publications. The course will also delve into topics like historical context and the development of graphic communications, principles of design, and some use of technology in designing especially the computer.
34.    JSS 1243: INTRODUCTION TO PSYCHOLOGY

The students will be introduced to the study of human psychology. This will enhance their understanding of different behavioral expression of individuals.
35.    JSS 1233: INTRODUCTION TO SOCIOLOGY

This course consists of fundamental sociology. It includes the introduction to sociology, social group and social control, social inequality, social institution and social dynamics and social changes.
36.    JMS 1253: PRINCIPLES AND PRACTICE OF MANAGEMENT

The subjects discussed tend to explore some significant areas related to management field such as organization culture, management strategy and decision making, organization management, leadership and information systems management.
37.    JMS 1263: PRINCIPLES AND PRACTICES OF MARKETING

This course is about principles of marketing. It exposes to students on how the marketing function can contribute profit and the concept is really practical in making firm decision. This subject begins with the principles of marketing, then the firm’s activities on market their products. Case studies are an additional element for students to view the real picture of the firm.
38.    JLS 2133: NEGOTIATION SKIL

This course helps students understand the importance of effective negotiation and be familiar with the reality of the market place as many people depend on negotiating skills to get things done with co-workers, bosses, suppliers, business partners, creditors, regulators and other authorities.  It also provides students to gain greater insight on why it is important to identify our individual personality, strengths and weaknesses, the need for careful planning, and the ability to recognize hidden psychological strategies in a negotiation process.
39.    JMS 2143: STATISTICS

This course exposes students to the foundation of statistics for the social and behavioral sciences. Students will learn ways the data are use to test the research hypotheses, to answer the research questions and to achieve the research objectives.  For these goals, students will learn ways and process of data analyses, which include how to organize, summarize and interpret statistical information in a study.  Through the process of data analyses, students will learn how statistics would help researchers describe the outcome of the study and how the findings can be penalized to the larger population.  Students will also be exposed to SPSS computer software (Statistical Packages For the Social Sciences) for every statistical procedure of data analysis.  All the topics in this course are important to the students and their future career as professionals in communication fields.
40.    JTS 3316: INDUSTRIAL TRAINING

The course tends to expose student to various aspects of industrial training especially in areas related to corporate communication field such as media relations, organizational communication, public relations, marketing communication, and publicity and event management.
41.    JMS 2333: PERSUASIVE COMMUNICATION

This course will cover persuasion from a scientific perspective, as well as what it means to study persuasive communication from a scientific vantage point. Students will be exposed on the effect of persuasive messages on certain people. Besides, students will examine different ways people process the persuasive messages and explore the implications of different processing modes for the design of maximally effective persuasive appeal. Moreover students are also learned to develop persuasive messages in various context and perspective. At the same time they will evaluate and analyze different types of persuasive messages that people magnify.
42.    JMS 3223: ENTREPRENEURSHIP

The course explores significant areas related to entrepreneurship field such as organization culture, management strategy and decision making, financial decision, leadership and risk management.
43.    JMS 3163: INSTRUCTIONAL COMMUNICATION AND TECHNOLOGY

This course is meant to help students to be able to understand the design and development of instructional media and materials for use in educational, industrial, and / or human services programs. The course Includes current development of computer-generated instructional materials.
44.    JLS 1133: OCCUPATIONAL ENGLISH

This course is the first part of s two-semester program designed for students who have not attained the required proficiency level which enable them to perform effectively in their academic at tertiary level. It seek to remedy students’ weaknesses in English and raise their proficiency level in the major aspects of grammar as well providing exercises and practice with the integration of vocabulary, grammar, and the four communicative skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing. Students will be trained to be autonomous learners by incorporating strategy training (learning how to learn) in each component of the course.
45.    JMS 2153: VIDEOGRAPHY

This professional course is offered for the later semester students. It encourages students to use their creativity to produce video programmes. Students will be taught concepts and techniques to produce video programmes from pre to post production stages
46.    JJS 2224: FEATURE WRITING

This course will expose students to the various skills required to produce feature articles.  They will be trained to write features using styles that would attract the attention of editors and readers.  Students are expected to get at least one feature accepted for publication by a newspaper or magazine.  It will also expose students to the reading and writing of quality publications.  It will train students to be able think is sharply, focused and critically, to help produce writings that are creative and alive.
47.    JMS 2123: SCRIPTWRITING AND STORYBOARDING

This course sets the foundation for the principles, forms, and techniques of video and television scriptwriting and storyboarding processes.  By emphasizing the development of basic skills in script format apart from character development and dialogue, the course prepares students for more advanced individual and collaborative work in writing for the media.  Scriptwriting and storyboarding aims to bring out the visual media style that is crucial in gaining audience attention.  Student will learn about media screenplay structure, analyze strategies in video and television, learn and apply correct script form, and creatively engage in the various stages of original scriptwriting with special emphasis on the steps leading towards creating a final screenplay.
48.    JSS 1253: MASS MEDIA & SOCIETY

This course focuses on the media in their various forms – print and electronic – and how or why they have become an integral part of human life.  Understanding the systems of mass media and society would mean delving into the nature of the social, political and economic order. Studying the concepts of freedom and controls in the society, the values and cultural identities, the power structure and the social order is therefore essential.
