HISTORY
It was one of the first new United Kingdom universities of the 20th century, established with degree-giving powers in 1949 as the University College of North Staffordshire. In 1962, it gained University status, and has since been known as Keele University. The university is situated on an estate with extensive woods, lakes and parkland, formerly owned by the Sneyd family, who came into possession of the estate in the mid-16th century. Before the Sneyds the area was owned by the Knights Templar, a medieval Military Order.
GENERAL INFORMATION
- Keele is the UK’s largest integrated campus university and occupies a 617 acre estate.
- Apart from increasing numbers of academic and residential buildings, other facilities include an astronomical observatory, art gallery, arboretum, chapel, Islamic centre, shops, cafés and places to eat and drink. The campus also has science, business enterprise parks and conference centres.
- It is close to Newcastle-under-Lyme and Hanley (which is the main centre of the City of Stoke-on-Trent). Birmingham, Manchester and Liverpool are about an hour away by rail and London is about 90 minutes by rail and three to four hours by road.
INTERESTING FACTS
- In May 2012 Keele was listed by the Times Higher Education (THE) magazine as among the world’s top 100 new (50 years old or less) universities.
- Keele University strongly believes in Dual Honours, and offers students the opportunity to take modules outside of their main degree subjects to broaden their studies and opportunities even further.
- The Centre for Economics and Management offers a lively and active environment for research in economics and management. The 2008 RAE rated 85% of submitted work in Business and Economics as of international standard and some of its submissions as world class.
