HISTORY It was one of the first new United Kingdom universities of the 20th century, established with degree-giving powers in 1949 as the University College of North Staffordshire. In 1962, it gained University status, and has since been known as Keele University. The university is situated on an estate with extensive woods, lakes and parkland, formerly owned by the Sneyd family, who came into possession of the estate in the mid-16th century. Before the Sneyds the area was owned by the Knights Templar, a medieval Military Order.
