The Petroleum Engineering degree programme at UCSI University is designed to equip students with a solid foundation and knowledge of oil and gas exploration, production and development.

The programme encompasses a well-balanced curriculum that focuses on both upstream and downstream industries. It covers a wide range of courses that include but are not limited to mathematics, basic sciences, computing, introductory engineering, geology and petrophysics, drilling engineering, reservoir engineering, production engineering, economic and project management, as well as humanities and social sciences. Special features of the programme include:

  • Commercial reservoir simulation software used for teaching and learning
  • Reservoir engineering including elements in rocks and fluid properties, enhanced oil recovery and natural gas engineering
  • Oil and gas production operations including well completion, well diagnosis and treatments
  • Field trips
  • Laboratories to study drilling, rocks and fluid properties
  • Field development project; and
  • Final Year research and development project.

In this programme, students are also required to undergo industrial training under UCSI University’s Co-operative Placement (Co-op) Programme at the end of their 2nd and 3rd academic years. The Co-op programme aims to provide an avenue for students to gain exposure to professional practices in an actual working environment as well as develop the necessary soft skills.

Accreditation

All of UCSI University’s engineering degree programmes comply with the latest requirements for accreditation by the Malaysian Engineering Accreditation Council, which fulfils the international requirements drafted in the Washington Accord.

Assessments

The structure of the Petroleum Engineering curriculum is developed to provide both breadth and depth across the range of Petroleum Engineering specialisations in order to produce competent graduates. The teaching and learning approaches vary according to the nature of course or topic being delivered. The programme employs a range of teaching methods to ensure the successful achievement of the learning outcomes of its programmes that include:

  • Lecture delivery

  • Industrial experience / Co-Operative placement
  • Field development
  • Final year projects
  • Seminar/site visits

Entry Requirements

Academic Requirement

  • UCSI Foundation: Pass
  • A-Level: 2 D’s inclusive of Mathematics and Physics
  • STPM: 2 D’s inclusive of Mathematics and Physics
  • UEC: 5 credits (inclusive of Mathematics and Physics)
  • Diploma: Pass
  • Other Year 12 equivalent: Overall average score of 65% (inclusive of minimum 65% scores in Physics and a mathematics subject)
  • National matriculation: CGPA 2.5 (inclusive of a minimum C grade in Mathematics and Physics)

English Requirements

  • A distinction (A+, A or A-) in English Language subject at SPM/UEC level; or MUET Band 5; or a score of 213 (computer-based) / 550 (written-based) / 80 (internet-based) in TOEFL; or Band 5.5 in IELTS.
  • In the event that the English Language Requirements are not met, student may be required to undertake additional English module(s) prior or concurrently with undergraduate programme, based on the University’s decision.

*International students holding equivalent academic qualifications but of non-English curriculum, are required to sit for the English Placement Test, which may result in the taking of the Certificate in English programme (1 to 10 months). Students who intend to pursue the above undergraduate programme directly, are advised to fulfill the above English requirements prior commencing their studies at the university.
