PROGRAMME OVERVIEW

The Master of Library and Information Science program is designd to produce graduates with a thorough knowledge of theory and practise in library and information science, and who are able to work in a number of information environments

PROGRAMME STRUCTURE

Revised Programme Structure for Master of Library and Information Science

The Master of Library and Information Science Programme through coursework and dissertation shall have a total of fifty-six (56) credits. The details are as shown below.

Through Coursework & Dissertation Mode
The programme shall consists of two parts:

Part I comprises:

• four (4) core courses, three with three credits and one with four credit; and
• one (1) elective course of three credit hours.

Candidates may be imposed to enroll in other courses and obtain satisfactory results deemed necessary by the Faculty.

Part II shall consist of fourty (40) credits and shall involve research leading to the submission of a dissertation.

Through Dissertation Mode

This programme shall consist of one hundred percent (100 %) research work leading to thesubmission of a dissertation.

Candidates may be imposed to enroll in other courses and obtain satisfactory results deemed necessary by the Faculty.

Currently, candidates are only required to take a Research Foundations course during their first semester of enrolment.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

For admission into the Master of Library and Information Science program, applicants must have at least:

For Coursework & Dissertation Mode

• a Bachelor’s degree with Honours; or
• a Bachelor’s degree and have working experience of at least three years in a libraryor an information centre; or
• a Diploma in Computer Science from University of Malaya or a post graduate degree in a field related to Library Studies or Information Science of anotheraccredited institution; or
• other qualifications approved by the Senate from time to time.

For Dissertation Mode

• a Bachelor’s degree with Honours or a comparable degree from another University inthe field of Library Studies or Information Studies, and have working experience of at least three years in a library or information centre; or
• a Post degree diploma in the field of Library Studies or Information Studies or a comparable qualification; or
• other qualifications approved by the Senate from time to time.

International applicants are required to have

• at least IELTS Band 6 or TOEFL score of 550 (paper-based) / 213 (computer-based) / 80 (Internet-based) if their first degree is from a university where English is not the medium of instruction; or
• pass an English proficiency test approved by the University.

Preference will be given to applicants having a Bachelor’s degree withCGPA of 3.0 or higher.

DURATION OF PROGRAMME

For Coursework & Dissertation Mode
The programme of study extends over a minimum period of three (3) regular semesters. While the maximum period is eight (8) semesters.

For Dessertation Mode
The minimum time period for the Master of Library and Information Science degree is two (2) semesters. While the maximum period is eight (8) semesters.
