Since 2004, the Biomedical and Laboratory Sciences Department was divided into two departments, the Department of Basic Medical Sciences and the Department of Paraclinical Sciences. Both of these departments mainly teach the first two years (Phase I) of the Medical Curriculum. A large number of faculty members are involved in the Phase I teaching while some participate in Phase II teaching of the curriculum (extends over the remaining three academic years). In January 2009, Department of Pathology, whose members were previously in the Paraclinical Department, has been established thus increasing the efficiency of teaching and research within the faculty.
In the Department of Paraclinical Sciences, there are 5 main units, namely Microbiology, Immunology, Entomology/Parasitology, Pharmacology and Genetics which form the important basis of the preclinical years teaching inputs.
