Programme Description
The Bachelor of Arts (Hons.) English for Professionals programme comprises courses that promote and support independent and intellectual enquiry, reflective thought, and creativity. The range of courses integrate both theoretical content and practical language skills to develop an understanding of the relationship between writing, reading, text and audience and the wider context of communities and society. The all-encompassing nature of the programme allows students to gain relevant knowledge in language studies and develop language skills for diverse real-life situations.
This programme is designed to help undergraduates to develop and acquire theoretical knowledge and principles necessary for understanding the structure and use of the English language. The skills taught would enable students to communicate effectively in English in a wide range of social and professional contexts. Attention is also given to interpersonal skills, critical thinking skills and problem-solving abilities to enable students to participate meaningfully in a changing international environment. Students also learn a broad range of professional registers in English appropriate for interaction with employers and colleagues in a variety of work-related situations.
Programme Outcomes
The BA (Hons.) English for Professionals programme is designed to encourage and support independent and reflective thought, study and creativity. The range of topics that integrate both theoretical content and practical language skills are intended to develop in undergraduates an understanding of the relationship between writing, reading, text and audience and the wider context of communities and society. The wide ranging nature of the course allows undergraduates the choice to pursue a variety of themes and to develop diverse skills working with language used in a range of real-life situations. Upon the completion of the programme, the graduates should be able to:
(a) acquire knowledge about the English language and critically apply theory to practice;
(b) apply professional English language skills effectively and confidently in a variety of contexts;
(c) demonstrate advanced problem-solving skills in workplace communication;
(d) employ effective and professional oral and written communication skills in various cultural and language settings;
(e) work independently as well as in a team with good ethics and professionalism;
(f) adapt themselves to different professional demands;
(g) conduct sustainable and entrepreneurial language-based projects;
(f) exhibit professional communication and leadership abilities.
