The Professional Doctorate in Global Public Health is a new interdisciplinary research degree at the Monash University Sunway campus. Also known as the DrPH (Global Health), the program is ideal for practitioners aiming for a career that combines research, leadership, management and public health knowledge.
The DrPH (Global Health) program aims to cultivate interdisciplinary leaders in global public health. We gear our teaching toward the development of future leaders. Our students have the capacity and vision to assess and develop interventions that address the health needs of entire populations. This includes the most disadvantaged, marginalised and vulnerable populations both in developing countries and more broadly.
Malaysia is in a very strong position to offer leadership in our region, particularly with our growing focus on public health challenges. Global public health is one of Monash Malaysia’s research strengths, allowing us to give our students a program that is responsive, relevant and targeted.
We have developed our program in close consultation with government, industry and non-profit groups, reflecting the strong demand within the region for this doctorate. The National Ministry of Health in Malaysia recognises the quality of the program, making the DrPH the preferred option for staff continuing professional development.
The DrPH(Global Health) is a two-part program.
Part I is an intensive, two-semester taught element with two core compulsory 48-credit coursework units. It is grouped into four broad thematic areas:
On successful completion of Part I of the program, Public Health Doctoral Candidates will progress to Part II. This element involves a maximum of two to three separate, professionally-based, research internships, each of approximately eight months duration. The purpose of the research internships is to expose candidates to the professional practice of public health, where they will be mentored by professionals in leadership roles and explore the real life nexus between research, policy and practice.
During Part II, candidates will write a thesis portfolio of around 70,000 words, consisting of publications based on their research internships.
