The Sunway University Business School BSc (Hons) Actuarial Studies is a 3-year degree programme designed to provide a career pathway for prospective students who aspire to enter the actuarial profession. The BSc (Hons) Actuarial Studies programme also prepares students for professional examinations that are conducted by The Society of Actuaries (SOA), Casualty Actuarial Society (CAS) and Canadian Institute of Actuaries (CIA). The professional examinations will lead to professional designations such as Fellow of Society of Actuaries (FSA), Chartered Enterprise Risk Analyst (CERA), Fellow of Casualty Actuarial Society (FCAS) and Fellow of Canadian Institute of Actuaries (FCIA). | |||||||||||||||||||||||

Actuaries usually work in companies that deal with life and general insurance, retirement systems, pension plans, health and finance. Actuary skills are also highly sought after by corporate companies such as commercial banks, brokerages, investment banks and mutual funds. Government agencies such as Bank Negara also require Actuaries in risk management and financial consulting services. With many emerging new risks, there will definitely be many opportunities for Actuaries in the future.The career of an Actuary begins with an undergraduate actuarial degree where prospective students will study subjects related to Financial Economics and Management, Statistics and Risk Theory. Students can also sit for professional examinations conducted by SOA, CAS and CIA. Upon successful completion of the degree and having passed some professional examinations, graduates can start their career as an Actuarial Assistant. Graduates can also continue to undertake the remaining professional examination modules while working and eventually earn qualified actuary professional status such as FSA, CERA, FCAS and FCIA.
Aspiring Actuaries have many options to specialise and practice in various areas such as Finance or Enterprise Risk Management (ERM), Individual Life and Annuities, Group and Health Insurance, Investment, Retirement Benefits, and Casualty and Property Insurance. To become a professional Actuary may require time, patience and a lot of sacrifice and one must be prepared to study hard by passing all examinations at degree level as well as the professional examinations. Students who are prepared to persevere and work hard will have a better chance of becoming a professional Actuary with professional status such as FSA, CERA, FCAS and FCIA. |
