About the course

Course Description:

Academic Writing is a supporting English proficiency-cum-writing course designed to help degree students with their English to help them cope with their writing of academic essays.

Aims and Objectives:

At the end of the course, the students will have acquired the following:

  • A wider academic vocabulary
  • Ability to summarise
  • An ability to plan and structure an academic essay
  • A better ability to interact with academic texts

Course Structure:

Each week there is a class of three hours. The course is organised around academic writing tasks, summarising and remedial grammar.

The teacher works on expanding the students’ active vocabulary, improving their understanding of concepts, raising their ability to write about ideas and concepts in their own words, refining their use of grammar and improving textual coherence and cohesion in their written work. There is a final examination to assess how much the students have learnt.
