The word ‘surgery’ is derived from the Greek cheirourgia meaning ‘hand work’. The exact art and the subtle science that is demanded from experts in this filed is clearly illustrated in the Master of Surgery offered by UM.
The programme is committed to increase future experts in the field of surgery. Students are exposed to the finer points of surgery as well as equipping them with comprehensive preparation in the fundamentals. Students will be able to improve the care of surgical patients and effectively address the demands of practicing surgeons, surgery residents, medical students, surgical patients, and the public.
Entry Requirements
General requirements
Degree of Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery from the University of Malaya or an equivalent medical qualification approved by the Senate;
And
At least one year of post-registration clinical experience approved by the Senate.
Other requirements
Qualifies for registration as a medical practitioner under the Medical Act 1971 (Act 50) of Malaysia;
And
Satisfies the Department’s requirement in an Entrance Evaluation recognized by the Faculty.
Language Requirement
Foreign candidates are required to:
Have at least IELTS Band 6 or TOEFL 550 if their first degree is from a university where English is not the medium of instruction.
Or
Pass an English proficiency test approved by the University.
Programme Structure
This Master’s programme, offered by the Faculty of Medicine, requires candidates to fulfill both coursework as outlined by the department, and clinical duties as assigned. Successful completion of the programme is also subject to the standards set by the Faculty.
