A Family Medicine Practitioner is a physician or medical doctor who provides primary care for acute or chronic illnesses as well as provide preventive care and health education for people of all ages. Also known as a general practitioner, the doctor has the necessary skills to perform minor surgery or obstetrics, should they have the facilities to do so.
A wide knowledge of medicine is required to be considered skilled, as Family Medicine generally covers the healing of all walks of life, from the young to the elderly, and early detection of disease is of utmost importance in both these age groups.
Entry Requirements
General requirements
Degree of Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery from the University of Malaya or an equivalent medical qualification approved by the Senate;
And
At least one year of post-registration clinical experience approved by the Senate.
Other requirements
Qualifies for registration as a medical practitioner under the Medical Act 1971 (Act 50) of Malaysia;
And
Satisfies the Department’s requirement in an Entrance Evaluation recognized by the Faculty.
Language Requirement
Foreign candidates are required to:
Have at least IELTS Band 6 or TOEFL 550 if their first degree is from a university where English is not the medium of instruction.
Or
Pass an English proficiency test approved by the University.
Programme Structure
This Master’s programme, offered by the Faculty of Medicine, requires candidates to fulfill both coursework as outlined by the department, and clinical duties as assigned. Successful completion of the programme is also subject to the standards set by the Faculty.
