This research degree may be undertaken in the Jeffrey Cheah School of Medicine and Health Sciences’ principal biomedical research areas and strengths.
The program will engage you in hands-on, mentored, biomedical research and the processes of research design, analysis and presentation. Mentors, who are Monash Sunway academic staff, will share their own disciplinary research and teach you disciplinary research methods.
The work undertaken as part of this research degree must constitute a significant contribution to the knowledge and understanding of a field of study of direct concern to the school. It must also demonstrate your capacity to carry out independent research.
You are advised to choose an area of research in biomedical sciences, pharmaceutical, pharmacology, nursing, clinical research or public health programs that is related to your undergraduate studies. You should talk to potential supervisors in the Jeffrey Cheah School of Medicine and Health Sciences about possible research topics.
This program has two parts, with each part taking a year to complete. Part one is not an awardable degree, but a qualification for part two of the program or conversion into the PhD program.

If you achieve an overall grade of more than 70 per cent, you can proceed to complete part two of the program or convert to the PhD course. You will be awarded your master’s degree after successfully completing part two of the program.
Part-one students who obtain an overall grade of less than 70 per cent but more than 50 per cent will be advised not to proceed to part two of the program and offered the exit award of Postgraduate Diploma in Biomedical Science.

This master’s program will give you specialist expertise in biomedical sciences research as well as laboratory experience, and the skills and expertise to pursue a career in a variety of biomedical professions or further research and admission into a PhD program.
Candidates must undertake a major research thesis, equal to 75 per cent of the course. The remaining 25 per cent is specified by the enrolling department and comprises coursework, such as a literature review and/or statistics classes.
