About the course
Course Description:
The Master of Arts (TESOL) course is designed to meet the demand by degree holders for a postgraduate program in TESOL.
This course aims to
- facilitate the development of disciplinary knowledge in the area of second language acquisition, as well as in the area of teaching English to speakers of other languages
- equip prospective teachers with the basic tools for classroom practice in the area of TESOL
- explore current theories and pedagogy in second /foreign language teaching
- investigate classroom issues related to teaching TESOL
- critique second /foreign language teaching methodologies
- discuss research trends in the field of teaching English as a second/foreign language;
- enable students to understand and apply research a range of methods used in TESOL and train students to apply research skills.
- It will provide students with the conceptual frameworks for a good understanding of the discipline with the objective of developing an enhanced capacity for application to the context of teaching English to speakers of other languages. Graduates will show creativity and adaptability in the application of knowledge and skills to a variety of situations, to solve complex problems, and to think systematically, reflectively and independently.
Course Structure:
Students will undergo three terms.
- Each term comprises four units of study, each worth 12.5 credit points. To be eligible for the award of the Master of Arts (TESOL), a student will need to complete a total of 150 credit points satisfactorily .
- The duration of study is one-and-a-half years for full-time or equivalent part-time. Full-time students will undertake four units of study per term or eight units per year whereas part-time students may take two units per term.
- Each term consists of 12 weeks and there are two terms per year. Each unit consists of three contact hours per week. In addition to formal class time, students are expected to participate in peer teaching sessions to give them an opportunity to experiment with language teaching techniques and critically evaluate them, as well as conduct real-life classroom teaching for the relevant, practical units of the program.

- MAT412 Pedagogic Grammar of English;
- MAT413 Genre Studies;
- MAT414 Methods and Approaches of TESOL.
- Term 2
- MAT511 Theories and Practice (1): Listening and Speaking Skills;
- MAT512 Theories and Practice (2): Reading and Writing Skills;
- MAT513 English for Specific Purposes;
- MAT 514 English for Academic Purposes.
- Term 3
- MAT611 Methods and Approaches to Language Research;
- MAT612 Issues in Applied Linguistics;
- MAT613 Assessment in TESOL;
- MAT614 World Englishes.
Employment Outcomes
The Master of Arts (TESOL) course prepares students to become English language teachers in schools, universities and private education institutions, to become course advisers, course designers, teacher trainers and to set up private education business. It also sets up a sound foundation for those who are interested in pursuing future doctoral studies in language teaching.
