Programme Description

Chemical Engineering programs at Curtin University of Technology cover the development, design and operation of processes and plant for the extraction, conversion and recovery of materials that are found in a great variety of process industries serving the needs of society. Among the more familiar industries are petroleum refining, gas processing, palm oil mills, petrochemical and polymer production, fertilizer manufacture, cement and lime production, minerals and metals extraction and refining, paper and board manufacture, sugar refining, food processing, production of industrial, and pharmaceuticals and fine chemicals. A graduate in chemical engineering may expect to find employment with process and plant design companies or within the manufacturing industries to manage, operate, maintain and develop processes and plant for the efficient production of materials. Other opportunities for employment are afforded in public utilities and authorities, research laboratories, academic institutions and consulting practices.

The Chemical Engineering courses currently available at the Sarawak campus are the same as the courses operated at the University’s main campus in Perth Australia. Students studying these courses at Sarawak also have the opportunity to spend one or more semesters in Perth at their own choice with no disruption whatsoever to their studies whilst at the same time Perth students have the opportunity to study for a semester in Sarawak. We offer the Bachelor of Engineering (honours) degree in Chemical Engineering, which is fully accredited by national and international Professional Bodies, namely Board of Engineers Malaysia, Engineers Australia and the Institution of Chemical Engineers, UK. We also offer postgraduate studies (Master and PhD) by research.

PROGRAM EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES (PEO)

  1. Graduates apply the broaden and in-depth knowledge of Chemical & Petroleum Engineering to analyse the practical problems and think creatively to generate innovative solutions using appropriate technologies
  2. Graduates make valid judgement, synthesize information from a range of sources and communicate them in ways appropriate to discipline
  3. Graduates sustain intellectual curiosity and know how to continue to learn not only areas that are relevant to Chemical & Petroleum Engineering, but also that are important to society
  4. Graduates adapt to different roles and responsibilities in multicultural working environment by respecting diversity, professionalism and ethical practices, and demonstrate leaderships in solving emerging engineering problems within the organization and society at national and international levels

COURSE LEARNING (PROGRAM) OUTCOMES

  1. Apply scientific and engineering principles to process engineering design and development, including sound risk management, environmental and OHS practice.
