Graphic Design (Visual Communication) has recently attracted greater general awareness. Graphic Designers are increasingly becoming celebrity figures with their work featured on well-known television programs. The graphic based industry creates a wide array of challenging and exciting career opportunities for young designers.
The Diploma in Graphic Design reflects and response to the changes in the industry and consists of the specialised areas of Typography and Editorial Design; Packaging Design, Illustration and Desktop Publishing; Photography and Advertising Design.
The aim of the course is to provide an opportunity for students to study a wide range of design processes and develop their technical skills and problem solving sensibilities to appropriately carry out design projects. The course emphasis is on the acquisition of skills to analyse design problems and produce conceptual solutions to prepare students through visualization and communication to develop design ideas into viable economic propositions.
The content of the course reflects the requirements of the design industry to combine structured teaching with independent learning. This development is nurtured through a series of design projects and related study programs to build confidence and understanding of the profession.
Design project work is the core of the course. It enables skills to be practiced and integrates knowledge acquired in each of the specialised areas.
CAREER OPPORTUNITIES |
Graphic designers create brochures and advertisements to promote products or services. They produce logos for products or businesses. They create visual designs for company reports and other print materials. Some graphic designers work on design and layout for magazines or other publications. No matter what, graphic designers use knowledge about layout and design principles to guide their creations.
Some graphic designers work in television or film. They may design the credits that appear at the beginning or end of a television show or movie. They may create storyboards for film production.
Graphic designers also work in website design. They choose the colors and images and design the layout to make the website more appealing.

Wanganui School of Design offers graduates of PJCAD the opportunity to seek credit exemption for Year 1 and Year 2 of the Bachelor of Computer Graphic Design degree program.
