INTRODUCTION
Due to the rapid development of electronics and computer technology, computers are not only being used in industries, but it is widely used by individual. And this is in line with the vision of Malaysia to become a modern industrial country in the coming future.
Industrial Electronics includes manufacturing of consumer products such as computers, TV, video-audio devices, CD drive and player, communication decives, mobile phone, etc. Furthemore, Malaysia is known as the main exporter and the number three highest producer of semiconductor devices in the world.
In order to make Malaysia competent enough in terms of industry, Malaysia needs engineers who are professional and capable as well as knowledgeable in electronics engineering. Lately, this need increase drastically and it is estimated that this situation will continues.
It is hope that the Diploma graduates will be able to fill up the man-power that is needed in the market today. Students with the outstanding academic achievements will be accepted to further their study to Bachelor degree level.
OBJECTIVE
The objective of this program is to produce man-power who are partial-skillful and at the same time owns strong fundamental in electronics engineering. Students who are succesfully completed Diploma will have the chance to continue their study in Bachelor Degree of Electronics and Bachelor Degree of Electrical at UTeM with a minimum course duration of 3 to 4 years.
CURRICULUM STRUCTURE
The curriculum structure of the course is similar to the courses offered by other local universities. However, our teaching concept implemented are a bit different from the rest. The course is conducted based on ‘practical and application oriented session’ basis, i.e. more than 60% from the meetings with students, students will be exposed to conduct laboratory experiments, computer-aided learning process, assignments and practical workshop.
The first year in the university is the fundamental year for students with the qualifications of SPM, Polytechnic Certificate or equivalent. The subjects offered are Basic Mathematics, Physics, Calculus, Technical Communications, and Computer Programming.
In the second year, students will follow the special designed curriculum, particulary for Electronics Engineering that comprises of Electronics & Electric Circuit, Logic Circuit, Computer-aided Design, etc. Each students are required to undergo industrial training during the special semester for a minimum period of 10 weeks. Placement of students at various companies will be supervised and coordinated by the Industrial Training Committee set up by the Faculty. The students will be placed at various companies throughout Malaysia. The training will exposed the students to a real working environment including the companies’ organization structures, business operations and administrative functions. The hands-on experience in the training will reinforce what has been taught at the University.
In the final year, the students are required to conduct a mini project on related topics. The Faculty will offer Engineering Workshop subject to students whereby every student is required to handle machines, shaper and drill press. They are also required to do welding, soldering as well as simple stock and die and sheet metal work. Upon completion of the practical course, students should have acquired hands-on experience with most of the workshop tools and the understanding of safety procedures.
In addition, students will also be taught with communication skills and co-curriculum in order to develop high moral values and to produce engineers who are not only skillful in technical but also being independent.
