Synopsis |
BBD 1312 | Instrumentation I | Student will be exposed with different types of equipment that commonly used in biotechnology research. The student will get the information on the principles, proper usage and the application of usage of the instruments in research. Besides, the student will be exposed with laboratory safety, aseptic technique, and sterilization and decontamination technique. The student will have practical sessions in order to give experience in handling instruments. |
BBD 2144 | Fundamental Biochemistry | Biochemistry is the multidisciplinary knowledge that describes life’s processes using the language of molecules that is applying the principles and methods of chemistry to explain the biological activities. The subject also covers the different types of biomolecules including proteins, carbohydrates, lipids and nucleic acids. In addition, enzymes photosynthesis, metabolic pathways, (Gluconeogenesis, Glycolysis, Kreb’s Cycle) are also included in the syllabus. |
BBD 2154 | Introduction to Microbiology | Know the importance of studying microbiology its scope, the major events in the early history of microbiology, the germ theory of disease and the historical developments and know how the evolution in microscopy and staining led to progress in microbiology, and to get introduced to the isolation of microorganism, obtain pure culture preparation of smear, staining and light microscopy and identification. |
BBD 2164 | Basic Plant Breeding | This course deals with a basic principles and concepts of genetic improvement of crops through application of basic qualitative and quantitative genetic principles. Different plant breeding methodologies relative to the mode of reproduction and application of modern tools in the breeding of crop plants will be discussed. Applications of plant breeding in research and industries. |
BBD 2213 | Fundamental Animal Breeding | Introductory to animal science prior to breeding aspects which includes anatomy, physiology, endocrinology, reproduction aspect which comprise of natural and artificial selection and animal breeding scheme and handling techniques. Applications of animal breeding in research and industries will be discussed. |
BBD 2254 | Introduction to Industrial Biotechnology | Having knowledge for the use of microorganism in the traditional and modern application. Student will learn the fermentation technique for production of product in various industries eg. in food processing, agriculture, aquaculture, enzymes and amino acids, fuels and chemical industry and in pharmaceutical industry. |
BBD 2311 | Basic Molecular Laboratory | The subject focuses on laboratory work which will enable students to understand the DNA, cell, tissue, organism and the biological information. It will also demonstrate the genetic variation and diversity at the molecular, cellular, organism and population level. |
BBD 2322 | Instrumentation II | This course is divided into two sections. The first section is related to instrumentation (chromatography tools and bioprocessing) and second section related to research methodology and scientitic reports.First section: Student will be exposed with the chromatography tools and bioprocessing that commonly used in biotechnology research and industry biotechnology. The student will get the information on the principles, proper usage, component of chromatography and bioprecessing instruments and the application of usage of the chromatography tools and bioprocessing instruments in research and biotechnology industry. This subject also provides the basic maintenance and troubleshooting of the chromatography tools and bioprocessing instruments. The student will have practical sessions in order to give experience in handling instruments and using the software especially for chromatography.
Second section: Student will be exposed with the various research methods conducted, how research work is written as well as on how research works are presented orally as well as in documented form. Student will be equipped with research methodology and scientific reports before they go to practical training and mini project at private sector and industry. |
BBD 3114 | Principles of Bioinformatics | This course cover the concepts and principles of bioinformatics, nucleotides and amino acid sequence databases, bioinformatics analysis techniques and application of bioinformatics software. |
BBD 3134 | Basic Bioreactor and Bioprocessing | This course cover the introduction to bioreactors, design and analysis of its compartments, biological reaction kinetics, heat transfer in bioreactor, mass transfer in bioreactor, maintenance of the reactor and economic bioprocessing. At the end of syllabus, students will visit the fermentation plants. |
BBD 2242 | Basic Genetic Conservation | This course cover the genetic variation and diversity of various organisms, plants and animals, effective management methods involving the in situ and ex situ genetic conservation, socioeconomic aspects of genetic resources, biodiversity, polymorphism and phylogenetic studies of related organism in relation to genetic resources and biotechnology application on genetic resource |
BBD 2233 | Environmental Biotechnology | This course cover the application of biotechnology to al aspects of the environment without going into too much depth into the techniques involved. This course is concerned with how biotechnology can be applied to environmental problems and issues. |
