Welcome to the Department of Basic Medical Sciences (BMS). BMS was established in 2002 in response to the recommendations by the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA). BMS is composed of Anatomy, Biochemistry and Physiology. BMS is charged with the responsibility of teaching biochemistry, anatomy and physiology for Medical Degree (Year 1 and 2) and Bachelor of Nursing Programmes. Members of the department are dedicated to guide our undergraduates to understand the fundamentals of basic medical sciences which will form a sound base for their clinical years. Members of the BMS are also involved in the supervision of undergraduate medical student research projects for the Elective I course (MDP 20505).
The mission of the Department Basic Medical Sciences is to serve the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, Universiti Malaysia Sarawak, through excellence in teaching anatomy, biochemistry and physiology supported by highly motivated, innovative, competitive and committed staff at all levels, working in an environment that is liberal, tolerant and caring, infused with strong moral and ethical values.
BMS is committed to achieve the set goals. In education BMS aims to form a solid foundation of knowledge in the basic medical sciences and integrating as well as applying the knowledge during the clinical years. In research, BMS aims to provide and create an environment imbued with research culture to encourage the flourishing ideas among the researchers, academicians and students for the benefit of mankind. Finally in training, BMS aims to share the knowledge and skills gained in its various activities while encouraging continued professional growth so that each individual can excel and pursue avenues that lead to national and international recognition.
