Jabatan Sains Politik ditubuhkan di UKM pada bulan Februari 1976. Department of Political Science at UKM was established in February 1976. Berikutan dengan penstrukturan semula Fakulti Sains Sosial dan Kemanusiaan (FSSK) pada 2001, Jabatan ini telah dikonstruksi semula sebagai sebuah program di bawah Pusat Pengajian Sejarah, Politik dan Strategi. Following the restructuring of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities (FSSK) in 2001, the Department has Deni back as a program under the School of History, Politics and Strategy. Berbanding dengan disiplin lain di dalam FSSK, sains politik adalah asas kepada kemunculan/terbitan sub-disiplin dalam pengajian strategi. Compared to other disciplines in FSSK, political science is fundamental to the emergence / issue sub-discipline of strategic studies. Tanpa kewujudan sains politik, maka tidak akan wujud perkara seperti hubungan antarabangsa, ekonomi politik antarabangsa, pengajian strategi dan keselamatan malah pengajian yang berkaitan dengan pertahanan (Ramasamy 2005). Without the existence of political science, then there will be no such thing as international relations, international political economy, strategic studies and security related studies even defense (Ramasamy 2005).,ms

The objective of the Political Science Program is to produce graduates who master knowledge of Political Science, and has an attitude of critical thinking and research skills and the ability to apply them in the field of employment. As one of the earliest political science programs in the country, this program has produced so many graduates are now cascading across services whether public, private and non-governmental organizations. Most of them venture into fields such as teaching, diplomatic officer, journalists, administrators, diplomats, researchers and politicians. It also serves as the umbrella to the production of new lecturers who currently works with several local institutions, particularly research universities are not newly formed.

Among the scholars who have served and contributed to the prestige of the program include Dr Sanusi Osman, the late Rustam Sani. Dr. P. Ramasamy, Professor Harold Crouch, the late Dr. Kamaruddin Mohd Ali, Ghazali Mayudin, Saliha Hassan and Wan Abdul Rahman.

By offering education from undergraduate level up to the Doctor of Philosophy, Political Science Program has a comprehensive scope of study includes courses such as Introduction to Political Science, Introduction to Political Philosophy, Introduction to Public Administration, Transformation of World Politics, Philosophy and Political Ideology, Theory and Politics of Malaysia , International Political Economy, Politics of the United States, Academic Writing and Research Methodology. It is designed to produce graduates who have the knowledge of the administration’s diplomatic relations with foreign countries and also expressed the formulation and implementation of national policies capable.

Requirements to graduate in Political Science is very important for filling up application claims the current market to study this program is extremely high. For example, for Semester 2, Academic Session 2012/2013, the number of students enrolled for a master’s course at least 40 people, an increase of over 100% from the number of commonly accepted. In addition, the current political dynamics changed by changes such as the first witness in the general election in 1999 and the 10th General Elections-12 2008 has increased interest and demand for this program.
