INTRODUCTION
Mathematics is studied because it is a rich and interesting discipline. It provides a set of ideas and tools that are effective in solving problems which arise in other fields as well as providing concepts useful in theoretical studies in other fields. This Mathematics programme provides an opportunity for students to enter this interesting field of mathematics. The programme emphasizes a broad education within mathematics, which includes pure and applied mathematics, statistics and operational research, and scientific computing and numerical analysis. Students in this programme are exposed to various research areas done by academic staff in the department. These include fuzzy mathematics, group theory and their applications, nonlinear waves and fluid mechanics, boundary value problems and parallel computing, operational research and statistics. Students can solve advanced mathematical problems in these research areas in their final year projects.
OBJECTIVES
The objectives of this course is to produce graduates (i) with high quality education in mathematics within an environment committed to excellence in both research and teaching, (ii) with strong mathematical knowledge and skills to play prominent roles in research (iii) who can work collaboratively as a team, and (iv) who have intellectual thinking skills.
CAREERS
Graduates of this programme can work in various areas in teaching and research centres, for instance as academicians and researchers in universities, project managers, statisticians and quality controllers in research and development
