This course also focuses on organisms of the sea such as marine plant, animal and microbe, the structure and function of marine ecosystem, human activities on marine environment, the importance principles of limnology and human activities on freshwater environment.
BDS 2242 Global Environmental Issues This course provides an overview of global environmental issues which includes the changing surface of the earth, how to develop and implement appropriate strategies to reduce the risks associated with a changing climate. This course also integrates all the information concerning global environmental issues, be scientific, political, economic or social, in order to obtain a balanced view on how to achieve a more sustainable way to manage resources
BDS 1114 Biology This subject enables students to have an understanding in basic concepts of biology. It will enlighten students on the functions of cells and to the molecules of life such as amino acids, ATP and nucleic acids. These universal features exist in a biological world of enormous diversity with the species ranging in habitats and adaptations that relate structure to function. It offers a comprehensive insights on the aspects of genetics and evolution. Finally it will enable students to comprehend that a diverse range of organisms are connected and interdependent
BDS 1214 Ecology This course teaches students on ecology. Ecology of evolution, physical conditions and the availability of resources will be discussed. Individuals, populations, communities, and ecosystems will also be explained. Applied issues related to ecology such as sustainability, pollution and conservation are taught in this course.
BDS 1134 Chemistry for Biology This subject provides an overview of basic concepts and measurement, stoichiometry, formula calculation, chemical reaction, molarity and acid-base theory
BDS 2144 Population Genetics This course will grant students with the fundamental principles and concepts in population genetics. They will understand the relationship between allele and genotype frequencies in populations in Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium. The course will also cover topics on population structure and gene flow, mutation, selection, inbreeding and genetic drift. Molecular evolution and quantitative trait variation will also be given emphasis.
BDS 1313 Conservation Biology This subject provides profound understanding of the concepts and various issues involved in conservation biology. The students will be taught to appreciate biodiversity and various ways to assess the biodiversity. Genetic basis of conservation biology and the threats of global biodiversity will also be discussed. Other topics include the value and ethics in conservation and the emerging trends in conservation biology.
BDS 2114 Plant diversity This subject introduces plant systematic andprovides basic knowledge on the taxonomy, life cycles and general structure of plant groups, fungi, plant like protiasts and monera. Importance of plant diversity in maintaining a sustainable resource will be highlighted in this subject. Moreover, hands on experience regarding experiments related to plant diversity will also be packaged in this course.
BDS 2124 Microbial Diversity This course gives information about the diversity and role of microorganisms in the environment. The environmental evolution of the microbes will be discussed. This course also covers the biogeochemical cycling of the microbes and their co-existence in the ecosystem.
BDS 2134 Environmental Science I This subject discusses the basic concepts of environmental science and introduces the components of the ecosystem. It also covers human population as a part of the ecosystem, and their activities that cause air, noise and water pollution. Human impacts on the landscape and biodiversity are also discussed. The ecosystem as the source of renewable and non-renewable energy and the toxic substances released in the process of utilizing the energy is also included.
BDS 2234 Environmental Science II This subject covers the traditional and modern technologies used in environmental science studies. It encompasses environmental impact assessment (EIA), environmental monitoring using remote sensing and geographical information system (GIS). Various research methods on environmental science are also included. The economics of environment will also be discussed.
BDS 2214 Animal Diversity This subject covers Darwin’s Theory of Evolution, microevolution and macroevolution to describe the evolution of animal diversity. It also focuses on the hierarchy of animal ecology and complexity of animal architecture. It describes the phylogeny and main adaptive features of the major phyla in the animal kingdom.
