INTRODUCTION
Telecommunication has now expanded at such a tremendous pace and covers over a very wide spectrum of topics such as analogue signal communication, data communication, transmitter and receiver systems. Others on the list include digital signal processing, microwave and radio frequency signal, telecommunication switching systems, mobile phone systems, broadcasting systems, satellite equipment and radar.
The Telecommunication Department of the Electronic and Computer Engineering Faculty has taken the initiatives to offer a new degree programme by the name of Bachelor of Electronic Engineering (Wireless Communication) With Honours. This area has been identified to be of great potential for future industrial development. Knowledge in this area is needed for the communication, broadcasting and global security monitoring. Wireless Communication covers areas like mobile system, broadcasting equipment and receivers, radio communication equipment, satellite and radar.
CURRICULUM STRUCTURE
A special Engineering Workshop Session is conducted for 6 weeks during the special semester. The main objective is to strengthen the students’ knowledge and skills in handling electronic and test equipment.
In year one and two, the students will be following the university and programme subjects such as the various mathematic subjects, Circuit Theory II, Digital system, Analogue Electronic, Control Principles, Microprocessor Technology, Electronic Signal and System.
In year three, the students will learn core subjects such as Electromagnetic, Communication Principles, Digital Communication System, Data Communication and Network, and Telecommunication Technology. These subjects are to prepare the students to go for their industrial training.
In the second semester of the third year, the students will undergo industrial training for a duration of 18 weeks in the related industry. This will help to prepare the students who are going to become future engineers, the technical knowledge and experience in the real working environment and also the get some basic ideas for their undergraduate projects.
The final year students will have to undertake and complete a project that covers a span of 2 semesters. At the end of the project, each student is required to do project presentation and submit a thesis.
During this final year, these students will cover more core subjects like telecommunication system, wireless communication system, radio navigation system, antenna and microwave propagation and wireless data network.
The students are also required to take subjects in engineering management skills, entrepreneurship and engineering ethics. In addition, the students have to take up courses in communications skills, co-curriculum and self-development program to ensure that the graduates produced are of high moral and of integrity.
Total number of credits to graduate in this programme is 132.
