Description
Dentistry is a respected professional career which demands high standards of care and skill, as well as an aptitude for dealing with people. The practice of dentistry may be defined as the science and art of preventing, diagnosing and treating diseases, injuries and malformations of teeth, jaws and mouth.
The 5-year Bachelor of Dental Surgery Program at SEGi University aims to produce competent, caring and knowledgeable dental practitioners. Students are involved in clinical procedures from the outset of the program, with an emphasis on the recognition and prevention of oral diseases. The dynamic curriculum is delivered within a problem-based learning approach, with an emphasis on contextual learning of relevant scientific information and placing a higher emphasis on delivery through engagement with the students.
The programme will prepare graduates who are:
- Knowledgeable in applying advanced dental science in a safe, effective and efficient manner
- Ethical, professional, responsible and engages with patients in making decisions about their health
- Analyzes oral health problems in complex situations and provide alternative paths in solving oral health problems using justified scientific evaluations
- Effectively communicates and works together with other dental and healthcare professionals and the community to promote health
- Engages in life-long learning and continuing professional development
- Plans and manages general dental practice and community programmes
Career Opportunity
BDS Graduates can register to practice anywhere in Malaysia without further examinations. Most graduates enter private practice as assistants employed in established clinics. Those graduates who choose to enter the public sector can gain employment in hospitals, clinics under MOH,schools,armed forces or they can choose to pursue postgraduate studies.
Specializations in Dentistry include Orthodontics, Oral Surgery, Paediatric Dentistry, Periodontology, Restorative Dentistry, Dental Public Health, Oral Medicine, Oral Pathology ad Forensic Odontology.

Entry Requirement
- Pass in SPM with at least 5 credits with B in Science subjects including Chemistry, Physics, Biology, Mathematics and Additional Mathematics
- Pass in STPM with CGPA 3.0 in Chemistry and 2 other subjects from Physics, Biology, Mathematics or Additional Mathematics or;
- Pass in Foundation in Science with CGPA 3.0 in Chemistry, Physics, Biology and Mathematics or
- Pass in Ministry of Education Matriculation / Asasi UM / Tahun Asas UTM with CGPA 3.0 in Chemistry and 2 other subjects from Physics, Biology or Mathematics or
- Monash University Foundation Pre-University Program (MUFY) with 70% in 3 subjects i.e. Biology, Physics, Chemistry or Mathematics or
- Pass A-levels or its equivalent with CGPA 3.0 or Grade C in 3 subjects i.e. Biology, Physics, Chemistry or Mathematics or
- South Australian Matriculation (SAM) – average score of 14 in 3 subjects i.e. Biology, Physics, Chemistry or Mathematics or
- International Baccalaureate (IB) with score of 30 (at least 2 subjects in Science at Higher Level (HL) and 1 Standard Level (SL) and obtained a score of not less than 4 in each of the subjects) or
- Canadian Pre-University (CPU) / Ontario Secondary School Diploma Grade 12/13 – 65% aggregate in 3 subjects i.e. Biology, Physics or Mathematics or
- Pass Unified Examination certificate (UEC) – B or with aggregate 70% in 5 subjects including Mathematics, Biology, Physics and Chemistry.
- Language requirements – minimum score of 6.0 in all four skills of reading, writing, listening and speaking in English Placement Test (EPT); or a minimum score of 550 in TOEFL; or Band 6 in IELTS; or an equivalent score in an equivalent qualification. Malaysian candidates must pass the MUET with Band 4.
- Pass an interview with the Admission Board
- Health requirements : Prior to admission, all short listed applicants are required to undergo a medical checkup to ensure free from communicable diseases such as HIV and Hepatitis; and to undergo immunization against Hepatitis B
