HISTORY

Glyndŵr University is named after Owain Glyndŵr – a Welsh hero from the 14th Century who first suggested the establishment of universities throughout Wales in the early 15th century. Glyndŵr University’s origins date back to the opening of Wrexham School of Science and Art (WSSA) in 1887. The university underwent several changes in name until July 2008, when it was officially renamed “Glyndŵr University” after being granted degree awarding powers.

GENERAL INFORMATION

  •  The university has several campuses of which, the two main sites are situated near Wrexham. Plas Coch, next to the town’s football stadium, holds most of the university’s courses, while the North Wales School of Art and Design is based in Regent’s Street in the town centre.
  •  The purpose-built site in Wrexham with recent investments of £20 million, has over 70 lecture theatres, seminar rooms and conference suites with a wide range of workshops and laboratories.
  •  Students number more than 8,000.
  •  The Glyndŵr University Student Village is situated at the northern edge of the Wrexham campus, very close to the library, the supermarkets and the Students’ Guild.
  •  Many students are accommodated in the high quality Student Village which offers a wide range of rooms, many with en-suite facilities.
